Quiz Team redefeats McNicholas
Yesterday afternoon, the St. X Quiz Team played against McNicholas in what was essentially a rematch of last Saturday’s matches at the NACT, except this time on three levels. One again, Mr. Sunderhaus moderated. Yesterday’s matches were much closer – and thus much more exciting – than those at Northmont:
-
The Varsity team of Larry Stosman, Greg Lim, Robert Hohbohm, and Joe Knadler quickly took a lead during the category rounds, leading 7–0 after the first round (American Literature) and 13–2 after the second (Mathematics). Soon, however, McNick starting making a comeback, with the score at 20–15 (St. X still winning). Eventually, St. X pulled ahead, winning the game, 62–35 and remaining undefeated.
The league asked some rather interesting questions yesterday:
This year, 10 new nations are slated to enter the EU:
Which of these, an island nation, is inhabited by Turks and Greeks?
(Answer)What US city witnessed the signing of the UN Charter?
(Answer)What group of Portuguese islands lie on the Atlantic Ridge?
(Answer) -
The Junior Varsity / 1st Reserve team of yours truly, Sean Barber, Brett Seifried, and Mike Knadler got off to a bad start. All three questions of the first category round, American Literature, was on The Grapes of Wrath, a book that apparently none of our team members and none of the other team’s members had read. Neither team scored on that round.
Fortunately, we fenagled (SP?) our way to a close lead during the rest of the category rounds. The category rounds could not assure our victory in this match, as our point total was so close to that of McNick. Both teams scored the same on the Alphabet Round, which rarely occurs. We managed to pull ahead during the Lightening Rounds, finishing 48–36.
I was able to significantly help out during this match, with questions including the following:
(Alphabet Round: L)
In what state would you find Lafayette Cemetary?
(Answer)(Mathematics)
What is 34?
(Answer)(World Geography)
This is a two-part question:
- What color is the middle stripe of the Iraqi flag?
- What color is the text on the middle stripe?
-
The 2nd Reserve / Freshmen team of Ed Kelly, Jay Kiger, Doug Lim, Lee, and other freshman played its last match yesterday. After slightly trailing throughout much of the category rounds, St. X tied after the Alphabet Round, and pulled ahead during the Lightening Round, winning 66–57. They remain undefeated.
I found many questions noteworthy, but I can unfortunately remember only one of them:
What planet did Mariner Ⅱ explore?
(Answer)
We play Mt. Notre Dame next Tuesday.
