Arrogance?

I don’t know exactly how it started, but St. Xavier has been given a reputation for being arrogant. St. X, IMHO, has always been very proud. But so has Moeller, another Catholic high school in the area. In fact, Moeller has a popular phrase: “Moeller Pride”. I have heard rumors that this whole scandal at St. X started when a student wrote an article for ESPN.com, including harsh and offensive remarks against Elder, a long-time St. X rival.

Arrogance offends me. I’m sure it offends or annoys just about anyone. Arrogance and pride is why (I suspect) some thew water balloons at my house a while back. It’s why there’s such a heated rivalry between GCL schools in this area, rather than just a healthy competition. It’s not that I’m against school rivalries, but when it gets to the point that people are shouting defamatory slurs at students of other schools, this crosses the line.

Fellow students of St. X, remember our school’s philosophy: “men with and for others”. Re-examine that philosophy. Do you agree with it? If so, good. If not, you may need to consider a different school.

I realize that it’s all in fun, but do you think that you have an unlimited right to that fun? For example, yes, I know of many a funny “dumb blonde” joke, but I dare not post them on here. I don’t want to unnecessarily offend people, after all.

Think about it. You want to argue with me about this? Feel free to comment on this entry, or, if you have your own website or blog, say what you think on there.
